An Introduction To Keto

You might have noticed people starting to talk about the keto diet recently. Maybe you’re thinking of trying it, or maybe you just want to understand what it is. Lucky for you we’re here to answer those questions and, if you want to give it a go, we can provide you with some delicious keto products to help you on your journey. So, let’s get to it.

So, What Is the Keto Diet?

The diet consists of consuming less than 50g of carbohydrate per day and around 70% of your daily macronutrients come from fat. If followed, your body will stop using glucose as its main energy source and start producing ketone bodies instead. Therefore, a ketogenic diet is literally a ketone-producing diet. People may decide to go on the keto diet for several reasons, including weight loss, health issues or lifestyle. Following a keto diet will result in your body being in a fat burning state, primed for weight loss; improved insulin sensitivity and an increased frequency of the cellular clean up process called autophagy.

There is a lot of talk around the amount of fat you have to eat on a keto diet, and if that can really be good for you. This is mainly due to the popularity of the Atkins diet in the 2000’s and what foods people associated with it… fatty bacon, steak and sausages anyone?

Here at Pulsin we want to change the view that keto is just a fatty meat-centric diet and get people to associate healthier, delicious foods with it. Think leafy green vegetables and plant sources as the fat source, this could, in fact, be key to long term success. We believe the diet should be just as much about ensuring there is a plentiful supply of dark green, healthful veggies. Kale, cavalo nero, spinach and alike provide essential micronutrients and fibre, providing bulk to the diet which will also have a positive impact on satiety.

With this shift in thinking away from animal products and onto plant based foods, plant fats can play a pivotal role in the keto diet, reducing reliance on dairy fats such as cream or butter and replacing them with more sustainable and ethical sources of fat such as avocado, coconut oil and even cocoa butter. Swapping out commercially reared, grain fed meat such as beef for the other sources mentioned will remove omega 6 fats from the diet which may confer additional benefit on cardiovascular health.

Using a combination of coconut, avocado, nuts, seeds and perhaps supplementary coconut derived MCT oil, you can get adequate amounts of fat in the diet to thrive on the keto diet without being reliant on animal sources.
