60 seconds with tennis superstar Jamie Murray

Fresh from winning the US Open Mixed Doubles,  tennis superstar Jamie Murray has amassed 7 Grand Slam doubles wins in addition to the Davis Cup where he was in the Great Britain team in 2015 that celebrated its first success in the tournament for 79 years.

Dedicated to the game, Jamie continues to push his personal boundaries and challenges to perform at his best on and off the court. This summer, he was appointed as ambassador of the British sportswear brand, PlayBrave. Based on a philosophy of challenging your personal best everyday, Jamie is the perfect embodiment of this ethos. This past summer also saw the launch of his new website and YouTube channel.

What do you enjoy about playing double’s tennis?

I like playing doubles because it’s fast, fun, I like the team dynamic of it and team communication.

What’s the key to a good partnership?

Some partnerships can hit the ground running and others take time to bear fruit. It’s obviously important to have good chemistry on the court, but also off it. It’s important to play with somebody you enjoy spending time with. You’re waking up at the same time, you’re having your breakfast together, warming up for your match together, in the gym together, warming up for practice together, having lunch together, playing a match together, you’ll maybe go for dinner in the evening. So it’s pretty intense. It definitely helps when you enjoy spending time with that person.

If you could choose anyone to play doubles with, who would it be?

It would be Daniel Nestor when he was at his peak as he was probably the best individual player in my generation.

Where do you get your mental strength?

I get my mental strength from wanting to win. When I turn up at a tournament, I’m there to win! I’m not there to mess around and that keeps me focused each time I step on the court, whether its practice or whatever, I’m there to improve, perform, I’m there to win.

You’ve started your own YouTube channel. Why have you decided to do that?

I wanted to give the fans a bit more insight into the unique lifestyle that we, as tennis players, lead. In tennis, the fans just see the players walk on to the court, play their match and then walk off. They don’t have an understanding of what goes into getting them to the point where they walk on to court, the training and preparation. And they don’t see the aftermath of the winning or losing and dealing with all the highs and lows from one day to the next. There’s also stuff to improve your game. I think YouTube is quite a good platform for coaching, because it’s free, so people can learn in their own time, at their own pace and regardless of money. Some of the videos will show how I train as a top doubles player, but also there’s a lot of stuff that’s relevant to all ages and levels. I’m hoping that everyone can get a benefit from it.

What’s the best thing about what you do for a living?

The best thing, for me, is that my job is getting out and competing on the biggest courts in the world, in the biggest tournaments, against the best players. That’s what’s exciting for me, what gets the butterflies going and the adrenaline pumping.
