Q&A with Dancing On Ice Professional Mark Hanretty

Now that Dancing on Ice has hit our screens again, we were delighted to sit down with Pulsin uberfan and Dancing on Ice professional skater Mark Hanretty ahead of his first performance this weekend!

We chatted to Mark about being a vegan, what prompted this move and what advice he would give for those of us who are looking to make the change whether as part of Veganuary or beyond…

How long have you been vegan?

I first turned vegan 2-3 years ago.

What prompted your move to veganism?

I somehow stumbled onto some vegan Instagram pages which prompted me to watch “Cowspiracy” and “What The Health”. Since then I’ve researched the subject lots more and now simply can’t consider promoting or consuming a diet that’s not plant based.

What has been the greatest challenge with moving to a vegan lifestyle?

Sometimes it’s a challenge being vegan when I am working away from home and food options are limited dependant on location.

The only other challenge is facing the dismay of people who can’t understand why I’d choose not to eat meat. I am careful not to become an obnoxious campaigner but equally I do want everyone to see that both humans and the planet need us to adopt this way of living more readily!!

What have been the biggest benefits you’ve seen since becoming vegan?

Since becoming vegan, I feel satisfied knowing I’m doing something to help promote a healthier way of life for the planet, animals and myself!

A lot of people are taking part in Veganuary for the first time, what advice would you give them?

My advice to anyone trying Veganuary for the first time is to source some substitutes for any favourite food that they have. I’ve got a host of delicious but naughty vegan treats that satiate my need for food comfort whenever I have a craving!

What one vegan product could you not live without?

I couldn’t live without but butters! I love them all and they are my easiest hunger pang killer!

When I’m busy I sometimes find myself skipping meals by accident but nut butter is my fail safe calorie hit!

What’s your favourite Pulsin product?

I love so many of the Pulsin snack bars – they are the perfect snack for both taste and nutrition!

We will be cheering Mark and his partner Saira Khan this weekend and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that their first skate in the competition goes well!
